Why we named it XENIOS FESTIVAL - The Host Festival
Hospitality (Philoxenia) stems back from Ancient Greece; rooted in gift exchange, generosity and reciprocity. Being welcoming to foreigners and travellers was perceived as a moral obligation and a defining notion around the country. In Greek mythology Zeus, the ruler of all gods, was also protector of foreigners. Embodying philoxenia, he was also known as Zeus Xenios. This tradition was passed on from generation to generation and became the defining element of Greek Tourism - the most important sector of our economy. Together with our cultural heritage they create a very strong force, constantly developing and strengthening our country, Greece.
Xenios Festival has a spiral as its logo. Having been used since the Palaeolithic era in Greece, it is one of the oldest symbols of all time. The spiral is the epitome of life and the eternal power of creation.
